I don't know why I did it and I expect anyone reading this would think they would never do it either.

It's not something I would ever ever ever do which is why I feel such a mug. I just wanted to put something to on to warn people about this sort of thing going on as there's nothing anywhere to make you aware. walking back down towards the marina we saw the police with another couple that had been conned and the man that had done it. Anyway they didn't do anything to us just told us to keep away. The man with all the money disappeared and the rest of the group asked us what our problem was. The woman must have realised that it was a con and wouldn't do it thankfully. Immediatley the men playing scowled and told us to go away and stood around us at the same time trying to get the woman toput down money. My boyfriend told her not to put anymore money down and put his hand over her purse. A bit later on it happened again and she pulled her purse out. This meant one of the guys playing guessed the correct box and got her 50 euros. Of course the box she chose didn't have the ball underneath so she lost her 50. In this case it was a woman who got out her purse and pulled out a 50 note all the men egged her on to give more but she stood her ground and only gave them the 50. As soon as the police had passed the 5 men would get together again and start playing and again a crowd would gather around this meant we could see exactly who was part of it.

As soon as police came anywhere near they would dissapear into thin air and the group would walk away. They would lose and keep flipping the box so the crowd could see what was under it then one of them would put a 50 down and guess the wrong box so that someone watching would shout out, when someone did they would ask for money. They would get together to attract a crowd and one would end up with all the money stuffing it down his trousers. The guy moving the matchboxes and 4 people playing. After watching a few minutes we figured out who was part of the group. We joined the group to see what happened. The next day we went back and came across the game again but a different guy playing. Obviously this ruined our first day so we just went back to our hotel, away from all the busy tourist areas. We walked off to get away from all the staring people and very quickly fiqured out what the game was. I know whoever reads this is thinking 'What a mug!!' that's exactly what I was thinking. as soon as we questioned it he said that he had lost 900 euros already that day.It was all over in secondsand the guy had dissapeared and I was left with a crowd of people staring at me wondering what had happened. (150 in total) Then they lifted the box and it wasn't under someone else in the crowd lifted guessed the correct box and got the money. I said no and he said he'd pay me back, I can't really remember what happened next but he was hovering over my purse and took another 2 50 euro notes. I stupidly got my purse out and took a 50 euro note out to match his and about 5 people shouted more, more, more, more. I had literally just joined the crowd watching and saw which box was under and someone guessed and gave 50 euros to the man swapping the boxes, they had guessed the wrong box and I just said ' no it's that one' immediately the man swung round and gave me a 50euro note and put his foot over the box then asked me for some money, I didn't know what he was talking about ( I don't speak spanish) This is the bit I'm so embarrassed about. You had to guess which box the ball was under. I'm embarrassed to tell anyone this but I stopped on the street to watch a game envolving 3 grubby match boxes and a little ball of paper. I haven't got a lot to say just wanted to post something to make people aware of the con artists around Las Ramblas as when I was researching before I left I didn't read anything to make me aware of it.
